- YourUserName in the above mentioned path is logged in user name.
- {identity number} in the above mentioned path will be different for every user.

Step-3

Winlogon.exe a Virus?

What is winlogon.exe?

The winlogon.exe process works to manage the user’s login and logout activity on system. The window which appears and asks for username and password to perform login and the window which prompts with the options to logout, restart, or shutdown are because of winlogon.exe process.

Where is Winlogon.exe location?

Winlogon.exe location is “%SystemRoot%\System32\” or in simple words “C:\Windows\System32\”

Is winlogon.exe a virus?

The winlogon.exe is not a virus but any virus may attack on this file or can use the same file name as winlogon.exe to reside on system on another path, so this is recommended to do system scan to eliminate viruses and trojans.

If you found more than one winlogon.exe is running in the task manager then one of winlogon.exe is virus. You must check the process location and if its different from the above specified one than you should kill the process and remove that file from its location as well.

Windows operating system contains several processes and services running in Task Manager and some of those are necessarily important for the smooth running of OS. In Task Manager you may observe mostly the critical Windows processes and services with some other processes related to the running applications. To access the Task Manager simply right click on taskbar and select “Start Task Manager” option or use the keyboard shortcut “Alt+Ctrl+Del” and click on “Start Task Manager”.

Some times, Viruses, Trojans or Worms use the same name as any system process and it became hard for users to differentiate between the original process and the fake ones that is running in the task manager. So it is important to know that how to locate Task Manager processes locations and identify whether its running from original location or not ( see also: task manager processes complete information ).

Locate Process Location in Windows 7

In Windows 7 Microsoft provides a very easy way to access the file location of the process as

Press “Alt+Ctrl+Del” and Click on “Start Task Manager”

Click on “Processes” tab then Right click on any process and select the option “Open File Location” and it will immediately open the container folder of that process file.

Locate process Location in Vista

Use the same above Windows 7 method in Vista to find process location

Locate Processes Location in Windows XP

In Windows XP Task Manager shows the processes but it does not provide any direct method to open the process file location so in that case you may use Process Explorer utility to do that. Simply download and run Process Explorer,it will provide the details about the processes running in Task Manager accompanied with the information about the processes locations.

Disable Windows updates

What is wuauclt.exe?

The wuauclt.exe refers to Windows Update AutoUpdate Client. This is an active process and runs in Task Manager all the time to check for new software, security or hardware updates by Microsoft and if there are some new updates available then it will download those for system. The wuauclt.exe just runs when you have automatic Windows updates feature enabled otherwise it will not appear under Task Manager processes.

Where is wuauclt.exe location.

Wuauclt.exe location is: %SystemRoot%\System32\ (or simply C:\Windows\System32\)
see also: how to check task manager process file location

Is wuauclt.exe a virus, Spyware, Trojan or Worm?

The wuauclt.exe is a Windows system file if its in the folder as we specified above in location of wuauclt.exe.

If Windows updates are turned on and more than one wuauclt.exe processes are running in task manager then one of them is virus, spyware, trojan or worm.

If you turned off Windows updates and a process wuauclt.exe is running in task manager so you may identify the original one by checking process file location and delete the fake one. The best way to eliminate viruses is to do system scan using a good anti-virus.

Can we remove wuauclt.exe?

wuauclt.exe removal: As its a Windows system process associated with Windows automatic updates so this is not recommended to remove it from system. Instead of file you can remove wuauclt.exe process from task manager by disabling Windows updates according to Windows operating system (read below).

Today we are writing about a critical Windows ( Windows 7, Vista and XP ) process called svchost.exe and we will see that what is svchost.exe process, svchost.exe location, is svchost.exe a virus, removing svchost.exe and more. You can read the complete information about svchost.exe process as follow.

What is svchost.exe?

Svchost.exe location?

Svchost.exe a virus?

Can we remove svchost.exe?

Check services running under svchost.exe

What is svchost.exe?

The svchost.exe works as a host process for Windows operating system (Windows 7, Vista and XP) and hosts or contains other services or processes which are required by Windows to perform different functions.

In Windows (XP, Vista, Windows 7) multiple svchost.exe can run at the same time and it could be possible that one instance of svchost.exe contains local or network service or services for a program and other instance of svchost.exe contains services for Windows system.

Where is svchost.exe location?

Svchost.exe location is, %SystemRoot%\System32\
or in simple words “C:\Windows\System32\” the drive letter C: may vary on your system according to Windows install location.

Is svchost.exe a virus?

The Windows svchost.exe file is not a virus but there is possibility that any virus sits on your system by using the same name as svchost.exe and defiantly it will not show an error message because of that as it is a virus, but you can identify the original svchost.exe from its location (see: how to check process location) and if you find svchost.exe on any other location than the above specified one then definitely that will be a fake file so you may remove that from system.

The other thing is svchost.exe could be infected by viruses or Trojans which may cause svchost.exe crash, so this is recommended to do system scan to fix these problems.

Can we remove svchost.exe?

The svchost.exe is an important Windows system process and this is not recommended to remove it because without this file Windows system will not function anymore. if you find svchost.exe in shape of virus, trojan, spyware then kill the process, delete it and scan your computer with an antivirus (see: Is the above section to check svchost process is virus or not).

How to view services currently running under svchost.exe instances?

In Task Manager Process you will find several instances of svchost.exe process so right click on any svchost.exe and click “Go to Service(s)”

It will take you to Services tab and highlights the services related to that svchost.exe instance

People ask me mostly about different Windows processes and now trying to answer one by one, lets see csrss.exe process.

What is csrss.exe? The csrss.exe is Client Server Runtime Subsystem process file which must run all the time on Windows OS. Csrss.exe file works for Win32 console windows, manage the majority of the graphical instruction sets including GUI shutdown, creating or deleting threads and some parts of the 16-bit virtual MS-DOS.

In laptops, the csrss.exe process file works dependently with power management schemes defined by the systems under Control Panel option.

How many csrss.exe files run in Windows OS?

There is just a single csrss.exe file exists on Windows operating system but users may experience that more than one instance of csrss.exe are running under Task Manager as this is the case in Windows Vista which we observed that at least two instances of csrss.exe run at the same time. The number of csrss.exe file instances may differ according to the operating system version but still the Windows OS has just one csrss.exe file (see below where is csrss.exe located).

Can we remove csrss.exe?

Csrss.exe removal, the csrss.exe process is included by Microsoft and holds critical features and functions for Windows OS. This is not recommended to kill or terminate the genuine csrss.exe process improperly because it will result the Blue Screen of Death.

Is csrss.exe a virus?

The csrss.exe is a very important system file and its not a virus but some times it may get corrupted by virus and some times the virus, trojan and spyware use the same name hat of csrss.exe, just to hide themselves from system users and in return any anti-virus program can be used to scan and eliminate those malicious files.

Where is csrss.exe located?

Orignal csrss.exe location is C:\Windows\System32\ (your drive may be different from C:)

How to identify original csrss.exe system file and handle csrss.exe problems?

Method 1

The original csrss.exe is located at above mentioned path. In case there are more than one instance of csrss.exe running in Task Manger then you check their location by taking their properties

Right click on running csrss.exe process in task manager and select properties or Open file location.

if the file location is different from the above provided address then it means those are not original Windows files and should be killed and removed from its location. You may need administrator privileges to take properties of running process.

Method 2

There is also an alternative way to identify original csrss.exe file, just navigate to Task Manager > Processes and right click on csrss.exe and click End Process

If this csrss.exe will be a virus then it will not show any critical message about the deletion and complete the process otherwise you will find the following message that the deletion of this file is critical for system.

Share you experience about csrss.exe windows process, leave some comments below.

ISO file is a single file that contains the complete image of a CD or DVD disc. Those ISO image files are most commonly used to transfer CD or DVD images over the internet.

In this guide I will be showing you how to mount an ISO image in a virtual drive to extract data or may be to play or watch it. You can use Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel. This is a free utility of 60 kb size, which allows users to mount ISO image as a virtual drive. Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel is an unsupported tool by Microsoft, so check out the Readme file text given below before its use:

Readme for Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel

THIS TOOL IS UNSUPPORTED BY MICROSOFT PRODUCT SUPPORT SERVICES

System Requirements
===================
- Windows XP Home or Windows XP Professional

Installation instructions
=========================
1. Copy VCdRom.sys to your %systemroot%\system32\drivers folder.
2. Execute VCdControlTool.exe
3. Click “Driver control”
4. If the “Install Driver” button is available, click it. Navigate to the %systemroot%\system32\drivers folder, select VCdRom.sys, and click Open.
5. Click “Start”
6. Click OK
7. Click “Add Drive” to add a drive to the drive list. Ensure that the drive added is not a local drive. If it is, continue to click “Add Drive” until an unused drive letter is available.
8. Select an unused drive letter from the drive list and click “Mount”.
9. Navigate to the image file, select it, and click “OK”. UNC naming conventions should not be used, however mapped network drives should be OK.

You may now use the drive letter as if it were a local CD-ROM device. When you are finished you may unmount, stop, and remove the driver from memory using the driver control.

The Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel only works for Windows XP Home and Professional editions. As we mentioned above that its an unsupported tool by Microsoft, so you can try it on other versions of Windows operating system but on your own risk.

Windows 7 comes with a great feature called HomeGroup that makes sharing between windows 7 machines very easy. We have already written on sharing files and printers between Windows 7 based computers here:

How to Share Files and Printers between Windows 7 Based Computers with HomeGroup

Unfortunately, HomeGroup feature is not compatible with Windows XP and Vista. In this guide, you’ll learn how to enable file sharing between Windows 7 and Windows XP.

Sharing Files Between Windows 7 and Windows XP

Make sure both of the machines are on the same Workgroup which by default is named WORKGROUP.

From your Windows 7 machine, go to:

Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center

Now click on Change advanced sharing settings.

Choose your desired options under Advanced Sharing Settings for the Home or Work and Public profile.

Now scroll down to the bottom of the list and choose turn off password protection if you want to give access to all users to your public shares.

If you want to turn it on then only those XP machines users having a user account and password on this machine (Windows 7) can access shared files, printers attached to this machine and Public folders.

Save the changes if you made any.

In case your XP machine is an x64 OS you can install Additional Drivers before setting up the XP machine.

Open the Users folder and then Public folder to see the shared items. You can create folders to keep things managed.

In some cases you will need to install the x86 XP drivers for the shared printer because the Windows 7 drivers are not compatible with XP. When everything is installed open up Printers and Faxes to find the shared printer.

Whenever you do your work on any file in you PC, your operating system keeps record of all your activities like when you created, modified or accessed a file. The date of creation, date of view and date of document modification are persistently added to the properties of the file. One can easily see it if he wants. This is called “Timestamp” of Windows File.

If ever you want to change the timestamp of a file, here’s the way to change the Created, Last Modified and Last Accessed Timestamps for any file in Windows:

How to Change TimeStamp of a File in Windows

Step-1

Download “SKTimeStamp” and install it.

Step-2

Right click on the file, of whom you want to change Timestamp and choose Properties.

Step-3

Under the General tab, you can see the Created, Modified and Accessed Timestamps.

You will notice third tab with label “TimeStamps”. Select this tab.

Step-4

From drop-down lists you can change the Timestamps of “Created, Last modified, and Last accessed” attribute of the file. You can also alter the specific time by using the up and down arrows of the ‘time’ section for each attribute.

Step-5

That’s it..

Now check the properties of the file again. You’ll notice that the Timestamps have changed.

When you are working on computer and you need to restart due to any reason the most irritating thing is to open all the folders and windows again, after the restart. There is and option in Windows operating system this problem. let’s see how to do this.

To Enable Automatic Restore:

In Windows XP: My Computer > Tools > Folder Options

In Windows Vista: My Computer > Organize > Folder & Search Options

in Folder options windows click View tab > and scroll down the Advanced settings, select checkbox Restore previous folder windows at logon

Click OK button and that’s all

Now, Windows will automatically restore and open your folders which were opened at the time, when you restart.
