What is svchost.exe?

The svchost.exe works as a host process for Windows operating system (Windows 7, Vista and XP) and hosts or contains other services or  processes which are required by Windows to perform different functions.

In Windows (XP, Vista, Windows 7) multiple svchost.exe can run at the same time and it could be possible that one instance of svchost.exe contains local or network service or services for a program and other instance of svchost.exe contains services for Windows system.

Where is svchost.exe location?

Svchost.exe location is, %SystemRoot%\System32\
or in simple words “C:\Windows\System32\” the drive letter C: may vary on your system according to Windows install location.

Is svchost.exe a virus?

The Windows svchost.exe file is not a virus but there is possibility that any virus sits on your system by using the same name as svchost.exe and defiantly it will not show an error message because of that as it is a virus, but you can identify the original svchost.exe from its location (see: how to check process location) and if you find svchost.exe on any other location than the above specified one then definitely that will be a fake file so you may remove that from system.

The other thing is svchost.exe could be infected by viruses or Trojans which may cause svchost.exe crash, so this is recommended to do system scan to fix these problems.

Can we remove svchost.exe?

The svchost.exe is an important Windows system process and this is not recommended to remove it because without this file Windows system will not function anymore. if you find svchost.exe in shape of virus, trojan, spyware then kill the process, delete it and scan your computer with an antivirus (see: Is the above section to check svchost process is virus or not).

How to view services currently running under svchost.exe instances?

In Task Manager Process you will find several instances of svchost.exe process so right click on any svchost.exe and click “Go to Service(s)”

It will take you to Services tab and highlights the services related to that svchost.exe instance
