How to Create Windows 10 USB Flash Drive Using Media Creation Tool

This is how to create safe Windows 10 installation media using the official Microsoft tool called Media Creation Tool. This tool is designed to download and create Windows bootable USB flash drive without any worries. You don’t need the ISO file, you just need a USB drive with at least 8GB of storage capacity. Make sure you don’t have anything important on the Flash drive.

Requirements:You need the following things to create Windows 10 USB drive.

  • USB drive with at least a capacity of 8GB.
  • Media Creation Tool, see the link below in step-1

Create Windows 10 USB drive

First, we download the Media Creation Tool and then use it to make Windows 10 bootable USB drive. So, let’s start and see the process:

    1. Go to the Microsoft website on the following link: microsoft.com/software-download/windows10
    2. Once you landed on the web page, scroll down a bit to the section “Create Windows 10 Installation media”. Click the Download tool now button.

  1. This will download an official Microsoft media creation tool that you can use to create a USB drive. This tool will download the latest version of Windows and write it on the USB drive. What you need is at least an 8GB USB Flash Drive. To Start creating Windows 10 USB drive, run the Media Creation Tool setup file you just downloaded.

  2. This setup will start getting the system configuration and on the first screen, you need to Accept the license terms.

  3. Either you can Upgrade this PC or Create a USB drive. So, to create a bootable USB select the option “Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC” and click Next.

  4. This tool will automatically select the Windows language, architecture, and edition according to your current Windows installation. If you want to modify it, uncheck the “Use the recommended option for this PC” and change it.

  5. I am going with the default so I keep this option checked and click Next.

  6. Now you need to select the media to use. Plug the USB drive into your computer, select the USB flash drive option and click Next.

  7. The USB drive you plugged in will be displayed on that screen. In case it not showing, click the Refresh drive list option. If you still not showing then try to insert the USB into another USB port.

  8. Once you see the USB drive you inserted, select it and click the Next button to continue making Windows USB.

  9. Media Creation Tool will start downloading Windows 10 and show you the progress. This step will take some time and it depends on the internet connection speed you are connected to.

  10. Once the USB flash drive is ready to use, you will see this screen. Click the Finish button.

  11. This will start cleaning the temp file that Media Creation Tool created to complete the whole process.

  12. Now, you can navigate to This PC and there you can see the USB drive with the name “ESD-USB” is ready for Windows 10 installation.
